The purpose of this basketball league is to provide an opportunity
to learn about God through Christian adults in the program
sharing their experiences and teaching skills. We focus on
equal opportunity to play, respecting God and others, and
demonstrating self control as more important than winning.
Q: When are sign ups for this league?
A: Sign ups start in late August and go through the 3rd week of September. You can register online at www.cvfirst.org/basketball. Once you submit your form, your child is required to participate in a skills evaluation, please check the website for times and locations. At the evaluation you will be required to pay your registration fees and choose your child’s uniform sizes.
Q: How are the teams decided?
A: We first try to ensure that players selecting each other as buddies on the registration form are placed on the same team. We then use the basketball skill evaluations to equally distribute players between each team so that every team has roughly the same level of basketball skill at the beginning of the season. We also try to ensure that all teams have roughly the same number of male and female players.
Q: When are practices?
A: Practices begin in early November and are for one hour once a weekday for each team. The practice times will vary from late afternoon to evening. Coaches select their practice time during a lottery prior to the beginning of the season. You will receive a call from your child’s coach prior to the start of the season informing you of the practice time they have selected.
Q: Will I be able to pick my child’s practice time?
A: No, the league is limited in it’s times and sites available for practices. Practices are once a week for one hour, Monday through Friday. Practices can start as early as 4 pm to as late as 8 pm. We do try and make earlier times available for our 2/3 grade division.
Q: When are the games played?
A: Games begin in early December and go until the middle of February. All games are played on Saturdays. Coaches will provide the schedules prior to the games beginning in December. Game schedules are also available on the league website, http://www.cvfirst.org/basketball.
Q: Does my child need to have prior basketball experience?
A: No prior experience playing basketball is necessary and all children are encourage to participate. The league is an all inclusive league for children to have fun and experience how to play in a team environment. It is the league policy that all children receive roughly the same amount of playing time during every game.
Q: How competitive is this league?
A: We offer our players a safe place to play with emphasis placed on good sportsmanship rather than winning. All children will receive roughly the same amount of playing time each game and there is no official tracking of each team’s win’s and losses. We have no “all star” game or league play-offs.
Q: How can I get notified of registration dates?
A: Please check the website www.cvfirst.org/basketball for registration dates and updated information regarding the league.
Q: How can my child and their friend be on the same team?
A: Your child should place their friends name in the “buddy” section of the application and your child’s buddy should place your child’s name on their application. Only one buddy may be indicated for each child and only children in the same division may play together. The league does its best to honor your child’s request, but there are rare occasions where buddies may not end up on the same team.
Q: How and when will I be notified of which team my child is playing on?
A: Usually by the middle of October. If you have not heard from your coach by late October, please contact us at basketball@cvfirst.org or by calling 510.582.0515.
Q: Will uniforms be provided?
A: Yes. All players will be given one uniform to keep. The league partners with the Golden State Warriors to get reversible uniforms – white on side and a solid color on the other – usually blue or orange. White is home, solid is visitor. The color your player will wear for each game will be indicated on the schedule they receive when practices start in November. It is a good idea when signing up your player in September to leave “room to grow” for the season.
Q: How can I coach in this league?
A: The coaches in our league serve a critical roll in the ministry. We are looking for Christian coaches who will serve as godly examples to their players. Anyone interested in coaching should carefully consider the league philosophy and their roll in the ministry before volunteering to coach. Please express your interest in coaching by checking the appropriate box on your child’s application. All coaches are required to complete a Ministry Team Application which can be downloaded at our website at www.cvfirst.org/basketball. Please understand that not every parent expressing a desire to coach may be needed to coach each season.
